Why is Andrew Tate Controversial?

Andrew Tate has garnered harsh criticism for his overtly misogynistic statements. He’s bold and brash when making claims, and they usually aren’t based on facts. Yet, he’s gained a huge, almost cult-like following with 4 million followers on Instagram and supposedly over 100,000 members taking his online course, Hustlers University 2.0. He’s also recently blown up on TikTok! Tate is a character that’s loved just as much as he hated. Let’s break down some of the controversies that dubbed him, “The King of Toxic Masculinity.”

Andrew Tate’s Views On Sexual Harassment

After his elimination from Big Brother UK’s 17th season in 2016, Tate became recognized thanks to an online video showing him using a belt to beat a lady while calling her a “whore” and instructing her to count her marks. According to Tate, it was no big deal! They were role-playing, and the woman in the video had given consent. He also mentioned that he was wearing a felt belt, which creates noise but is harmless.

His responses to all the criticism:

“They cut out all the sound cause she’s LAUGHING in the video. And they cut off the end of the video where she gets the belt and hits me back while we’re both laughing. What bullsh**t. It was 2012 and we were having a laugh.”

“Sexual harassment is disgusting and inexcusable. However, a man looking at you or whistling at you or asking your name isn’t harassment.” Then he added, “Women have been exchanging sex for opportunity for a very long time. Some did this. Weren’t abused. If you put yourself in a position to be raped, you must bare some responsibility.”

The multi-millionaire has since been permanently banned from Twitter. He also stated that 40{c8122336fa184b41b825475f39221c7fa2e59423b242708028c1f2502555c53f} of the reason he moved to Romania was that Romanian police were less likely to pursue sexual assault allegations.

His statements are considered controversial because he’s taking away the opportunity for women to define what is considered sexual harassment. Tate’s views, as a cis man, might not align with a woman’s traumatic experiences. In general, he views women as something to be owned, rather than as human beings. If a man is in a relationship with a woman, Tate says, “She belongs to him. And the intimate parts of her body belong to him cause they’re in a relationship. And if she wants to sell those, he has a stake in those parts of her body.” Despite Tate’s harmful quotes about women, that doesn’t stop him from getting female escorts and followers who are hooked on every word that comes out of his mouth. Thank you, next.

The April 2022 Human Trafficking Investigation

Andrew Tate’s brother, Tristan Tate, has been an accomplice in many of his money-making schemes. One of the most recent accusations they’ve had to fight against was when their Romanian residence was raided as part of a human trafficking investigation in April 2022.

The raid on their home began after a woman claimed she was being detained against her will there, according to a statement given to The Daily Beast by Romania’s Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism.

The Tate brothers responded to these allegations on their podcast:

“A girl had been at a party at my house, and her boyfriend saw her Instagram stories. The girl told her boyfriend that she didn’t want to come to the party and we wouldn’t let her leave, which is some bullshit excuse. So her boyfriend is obviously one of these believe [in] all females. She was a hoe. She wasn’t even hot. She was ugly.”

“He then calls the fucking police and says my girlfriend is being held against her will by the Tate brothers. The police call[ed] the American embassy, and the next day the police c[a]me to our house.”

Even if the woman’s statement was false, the brothers’ attitude and tone when responding to the accusations add to their controversial appearance. This isn’t the first time they’ve been accused of keeping women somewhere they didn’t want to be.

“The King of Toxic Masculinity”

Andrew Tate has suddenly gained popularity on TikTok after videos of him spreading his blunt, albeit aggressive views on several podcasts surfaced on the platform. One fan dubbed Tate “The King of Toxic Masculinity” since he presents himself as a wealthy, cigar-smoking playboy. His behavior is influenced by a patriarchal society and his father’s teachings, which causes him to assert his dominance and aggression. He’s also a part of the “manosphere,” the far-right men’s online community connected to significant criminal activity, including the raid on the Tates’ home.

Although he has been given this title, Tate personally views toxic masculinity as “garbage.” He says, “Toxic masculinity is a term invented by women nobody wants to f*ck to describe the men that the women do want to f*ck. That’s all it is.” He believes men and women revert to their gender roles in survival situations, so toxic masculinity is a first-world problem. However, in a short amount of time, he has been recorded saying some pretty awful statements fueled by toxic masculinity.

Here are some of Andrew Tate’s quotes that back up his nickname:

“You can’t be responsible for something that doesn’t listen to you. You can’t be responsible for a dog if it doesn’t obey you, or a child if it doesn’t obey you, or a woman that doesn’t obey you.”

“How are women allowed to drive?”

“Women can’t drive if that upsets geeks like you. I don’t give a fuck. That’s what I say. If it upsets people, tough, that’s my personal experience, you are going to have to get the fuck over it.”

“Read the Bible, every single man had multiple wives, not a single woman had multiple husbands. It’s against the will of God — it’s disgusting.”

“If you’re a man living in England or Germany or America or any of the western world right now you’ve decided to live in a country where any woman… at any point in the future can destroy your life.”

“At the height of my webcam pimpin’ I think I am the king of the world, the problem is the first two girls worked for me because they loved me, but once you get bigger you start hiring girls who don’t love you. They are in it for the money.”

“I’ll 100{c8122336fa184b41b825475f39221c7fa2e59423b242708028c1f2502555c53f} gonna have kids and I’m excited to have kids, I’m gonna raise them the same way I was raised, with nothing, with zero, I was raised the hard way.”

“Kids don’t need fancy toys or expensive things. People say, ‘oh kids are so expensive’, well yeah they can be, but also you can get two pairs of clothes [in a deal]. my kid doesn’t need designer clothes, he can wear a T-shirt, sit there, be good, if you’re bored, do some push-ups, there’s your fun. Push-ups are free. Get to work.”

“Get angry – anger is a fantastic force.”

Cobratate’s constant need for attention

Viewers of his content wonder if he believes in everything he says, or is it an act to attract more views? Videos from his past, when he was kickboxing, seem to be less intense and not as controversial. One thing is clear—he loves the attention. Tate launched a “genius battle strategy in January” and now he says he is “the most famous man on the planet. I’m more googled than Donald Trump and Joe Biden. Look it up. I’m the most googled man on the fucking planet.” If it is all really just an act, his mask is almost as unpleasant as his words.

In a public street interview, a man perfectly described the Andrew Tate phenomenon:

“It’s just your classic 2022 attention-seeking, like, look at me. Like, shock-value bullsh*t. Some of the stuff he says is so derogatory and unnecessary and creates a culture, you know, young kids see that on social media and feed into it, and it gets into their head and affects the way they look at women and think about their behavior with women. I just think it’s bad for everyone involved.”
